Top Crawl Space Insulation Tips

Find dependable local contractors for any home repair project.

Nowadays, energy experts have a different prescription for crawl spaces, based on the concept that they should be part of the home’s conditioned space (the area that is heated and cooled). Condensation is removed when the air is conditioned, which reduces the possibility of mold and mites. Energy loss from air ducts is minimized, and first-floor levels become warmer in the winter. Drafts are likewise kept to a minimum.

Before you do anything else, get rid of any water sources in the crawl area.

Downspouts should be extended, gutters should be maintained, and walkways, patios, and flower beds should be regraded so that they slope away from the home. Install a basement waterproofing system or sump pump if needed.

Insulate the walls instead of the ceiling.

Rigid boards can be attached together with construction glue or mechanical fasteners. You may also use an insulating mat to cover the crawl area floor.

Make use of water-resistant insulation (not fiberglass or cellulose).

Any rigid board insulation will do, but polyisocyanurate offers the highest R-value (6 to 7 per inch). Commercial roof insulation producers may have scraps and seconds available. All you have to do is pick it up.

All vent openings should be sealed.

Vent covers are available in conventional sizes and may be fitted from the outside. Make your own out of plywood and caulk it in place.

Rim joists and sills should also be sealed.

Fill the ends of the joist bays with rigid board insulation rectangles. To seal the seams, use a foam sealer like Great Stuff. Seal the connection between the top of the crawl space wall and the sill using caulk or foam sealant.

Tape an air and vapor barrier to the insulation and place it over the floor.

Plastic vapor barriers are available in a variety of thicknesses. If you want to use the enclosed space for storage, select a barrier that can withstand foot traffic. Many companies provide encapsulation services and can offer you the best one that best fits your needs.
